Although its little-known as a single malt, Glenburgie’s history stretches back to 1829 when it was built on the flatlands near Forres by William Paul. After the multiple changes in ownership it became part of the estate of blenders James & George Stodart. Stodart was bought out by Hiram Walker in 1936, at the same time the Canadian firm bought Miltonduff. Ever since then Glenburgie has been closely associated with the Ballantine’s blend. Single malt whisky from Glenburgie is quite rare today.
A luxurious nose kicks off with golden syrup, white grapes and cooking apples before malt and marzipan reveal along with sweet cereals. Stewed pear and a hint of brown sugar arrive after some time. Caramel, white chocolate and vanilla emerge through fizzing ginger and white pepper. Mandarin, lychee and deep dark fruits develop to form an impressively fruity backdrop. Relatively short, with flickers of spice. A well composed, gentle and fabulously fruity dram.
