Castello di Montepò is a Tuscan wine estate in the Scansano district of the inland Maremma Toscana region. It was founded in the 1990s by Jacopo Biondi Santi of the famous Montalcino family. The winery is housed in the imposing Montepò castle – a single fortress building dating back to the 12th Century and set on a rocky outcrop surrounded by woods and vines. The Scansano region is well protected by surrounding hills and the mesoclimate is dry with cooling breezes. The vineyards are predominantly planted on schist subsoils, but the exposure and altitude of the plots do vary.
As the most beloved oenological creation of Castello di Montepò, this label embodies all the organoleptic qualities of the Sangiovese Grosso, the exclusive clone owned by the Biondi Santi family. Sassoalloro is the name of a gigantic erratic rock of volcanic origin which for centuries has given rise to many legends.
Sassoalloro has a bright ruby red color with wide purple reflections. The smell is fresh, innovative, fruity and intense. It has remarkable Mammola aromas. The taste is soft, round, velvety and elegant with a long-lived palate. It is very persistent.
