Whilst an old estate with a consequentially long history, Quinta da Romaneira only really becomes of note when, in 2004, new purchasers of the estate placed it under the management of Christian Seely and Antonio Agrellos who had worked such wonders at Quinta do Noval. Since then the vineyards have been overhauled, the best old vines have been retained in tandem with a replanting programme for the rest of the vineyard. A brand new winery has been constructed, two-thirds of it underground allowing Romaneira to have a proper cool wine cellar in the heart of the Douro valley.
Colheita Port is a single vintage-dated Tawny Port. It is similar to Tawny Port in production, appearance and flavor, but the key difference is that Colheita is the product of a single vintage and can therefore show considerable variation from year to year. It is aged in wood for at least seven years, giving it a nutty, oxidized character. Although legally required to spend seven years in barrel, often spends as long as 20 years. During this time, the wine undergoes oxidative aging.
Golden-brown color, with reddish highlights. Aromas of ageing in wood stand out on the nose, as well as dried fruit, spice and notes of fruit in syrup. In the mouth it is fine and sophisticated, revealing excellent volume, exuberant tannins and perfect acidity. A long and appealing finish.
