Bodegas Toro Albalá is one of Spain’s historic and most respected family-owned wineries, founded in 1922 in the heart of the Montilla-Moriles region of Andalusia with roots dating back to an 1844 family estate. It has played a leading role in elevating the region’s wines by specialising in the Pedro Ximénez grape. Under winemaker Antonio Sánchez, Toro Albalá ages its wines in a former power station with vast underground cellars, holding some of Spain’s oldest and most prized stocks, including the internationally acclaimed 100-point Don P.X. Selección 1946.
Don PX Selección is a rare, vintage-dated Pedro Ximénez from Montilla-Moriles, made from sun-dried grapes and aged oxidatively for decades in old oak casks before late bottling. “Selección” denotes a special cask selection of exceptional concentration and balance, chosen for extended maturation and released only when the wine has reached profound complexity. Its a single-harvest wine that is not solera blend but long barrel-aged time capsule.
Rich mahogany in the glass, this vintage offers a harmonious blend of sweetness and freshness, with an aromatic profile of dried figs, prunes, dates, roasted nuts, vanilla, and a whisper of leather and old balsamic. The palate is full-bodied and luscious, showing elegant layers of dark chocolate, espresso, molasses, and caramelized fruit, supported by natural acidity that keeps the wine vibrant. The finish is long, velvety, and nuanced, with oxidative complexity giving it depth and a refined, mature character.
