Emidio Pepe Wines is an Italian producer in Torano Nuovo of northern Abruzzo. Founded in 1964 by Emidio Pepe himself, the winery and estate remains within the family to this day. Estate vineyards are nestled between the Adriatic coast and the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains, where the conditions for growing grapes are ideal. The 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of vineyards enjoy all-day sunshine, cooling sea breezes, a significant diurnal temperature shift, and well-draining clay soils. The entire collection of Emidio Pepe wines are bottle-aged rather than barrel-aged with the cellar housing more than 350,000 bottles. Each vintage, wine is decanted into a new bottle to ensure any unwanted sediment is removed.
This wine is produced with pure grapes of the homonymous vine, coming from 30-year-old vines that rest on clayey and medium-textured soil. In the vineyard, the dictates of organic agriculture are scrupulously followed, integrating them with some biodynamic practices, although the idea of grapes and healthy land was already inherent in Emidio's mentality. In the cellar it is continued with manual destemming of the bunches and spontaneous alcoholic fermentation in vitrified cement tanks, followed by bottling and decanting by hand without filtration.
An intense ruby red color. The perfume on the nose is of great complexity, capable of evolving in an impressive way with the passage of time: vinous and fresh when young, then it subsequently enriches its profile with references to graphite, earth and undergrowth. The compact and austere taste on the sip, is always driven by a beautiful acidity and a vital and sculpted tannin.
