Domaine Faiveley is one of the largest and most illustrious domaines in Burgundy, and has made its name with red wines made from the Pinot Noir grape. It was founded in 1825 in the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges under Joseph Faiveley, a wine merchant who had a desire for travel. In the beginning of the 19th Century, trade had begun between Burgundy and northern Europe, predominantly along the rivers and canals connecting the regions.
The Clos de l'Écu vineyard is a walled plot of 2.37 hectares (5.86 acres) It is separated from the slighly larger A l'Écu vineyard, also a premier cru. They are located at the northern end of Beaune's belt of premier cru sites, near the commune boundary with Savigny-lès-Beaune.
This terroir offers a fruity and very elegant of the Pinot Noir varietal. It displays a deep ruby color and remarkably pure notes of red and black fruits. The palate is lively and spicy with a refreshing touch of menthol. This wine evolves beautifully in the bottle although its generous character makes it a pleasure to drink in its youth.
