Gaja is one of the best-known wine producers in all of Italy. Originating in and still based in Barbaresco, in northwest Italy. Gaja name remains most strongly associated with Nebbiolo-based wines, though the company now makes more wine in Tuscany than Piedmont. The business was founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja with just two hectares (five acres) of vineyards in Barbaresco. Each generation saw expansion, although Angelo Gaja, who took over full-time in 1970, is often credited with the estate's more recent success.
A wine sourced with grapes from the Sugarille vineyard which was first recorded in the inventory of Pieve parish church in 1547. It is a 100% Sangiovese varietal wine with one year in barriques and one year in large oak casks, followed by at least two years of bottle aging.
Sugarille Brunello di Montalcino is a remarkably poised and terroir-driven expression of Sangiovese, opening with lifted aromas of sour cherry, red plum, blood orange, rose petals, cedar, and balsamic herbs, layered with hints of porcini, clove, licorice, and crushed stone. The palate is medium- to full-bodied yet beautifully transparent, combining vibrant acidity with silky, finely woven tannins that frame flavors of ripe red berries, orange peel, iron-rich earth, fresh pine, and savory spice. Despite its elegance and ethereal texture, the wine possesses impressive depth and structure, finishing long with lingering mineral tension, subtle salinity, and a persistent echo of wild cherry and Mediterranean herbs. Still youthful, it will benefit from several more years of cellaring, with an ideal drinking window from 2026 through the mid-2040s.
