Glenrothes was built in order to produce a cleaner, fresher spirit for blending. Together with four investors and a loan from the Church of Scotland, the distillery was established in 1879. Using a mixture of wooden and steel washbacks, Glenrothes is known for its complex malts, often requiring time in glass to fully open. Expanded upon twice, the distillery now boasts an impressive ten stills, producing over five million litres per annum. Unlike other distilleries, Glenrothes distils its whisky at a slower pace, using boil bulbs and very tall stills. The distillery has survived several fires and explosions including one in 1922 that destroyed 200,000 gallons of spirits. Despite these setbacks, the distillery has built up a reputation for quality with a floral, sweet and spicy flavor profile. The hand grenade-shaped bottles are also a distinctive feature of Glenrothes whisky.
Gingerbread, stewed apple and earthy vanilla, then soft tropical fruit notes and a hint of sherried funk. Palate is creamy with hazelnut, dried fruit and a hint of cinnamon. Hints of chocolate, old leather, dried herbs and tobacco add depth among Galia melon and honeyed oak. Long and sweet finish with a touch of baking spice and more stewed fruits. A perfect introduction to all things that make Glenrothes fantastic.
