Pingus was established by Peter Sisseck, who had already made a name for himself as winemaker at Hacienda Monasterio. Pingus's tiny production of fewer than 500 cases comes from three parcels of ancient, head-pruned Tempranillo vines in the Ribera del Duero region in Spain. First made in 1995, it immediately developed a cult status following rave reviews from Robert Parker in the Wine Advocate, and is now regarded as one of the greatest wines made in Spain, hotly sought-after and priced accordingly. Wine is known for its density, concentrated black fruit and mineral backbone.
Inky ruby. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, potpourri, exotic spices and incense, all sharpened by a vibrant mineral top note. Stains the palate with concentrated, sharply focused blackberry, bitter cherry, violet pastille and fruitcake flavors that deftly blend power and delicacy. Shows superb clarity and resonating florality on a strikingly long, penetrating finish framed by polished, well-knit tannins.
