Suntory Yamazaki Peated Malt Spanish Oak

Suntory is Japan's first whisky company, started by Shinjiro Torii in 1899. Now, over 100 years later, Suntory are the leading producer of Japanese whisky, with Yamazaki and Hakushu malt distilleries and Chita grain distillery in their portfolio. From these three starting points they produce a wide range of blended and single malt whiskies, catering to both the palates at home and abroad. The House of Suntory is a House of Japanese artisans, crafting world-class spirits, inspired by Japanese nature and mastered with Japanese craft.

Through the Japanese practice of Kogei, traditional artisans work in harmony with nature, using timeless techniques to challenge convention. For this collection, Chief Blender Shinji Fukuyo revisits a technique from the House of Suntory’s early days – combining peated malt with aging in Spanish oak.

The warm climate of Yamazaki creates tropical fruit notes, while the use of peated malt imparts a pleasing smokiness – accentuating the unique and colorful spice notes from the Spanish oak casks. A deeply indulgent dram that opens with dark mocha, raisins, and toasted almonds on the nose, unfolds into layers of rich smokiness and roasted cacao on the palate, and lingers with a long, bittersweet finish of caramelized baking spices.
