The Florentine family, “della Volpaia” (from Volpaia), consisted of artists and builders that designed armillary spheres and solar clocks. The most famous amongst them was Lorenzo, friend of Leonardo da Vinci, who built the extraordinary planetary clock for Florence’s Palazzo Vecchio. Today, Castello di Volpaia is owned
by the Mascheroni Stianti family, which ensures that every restoration respects its original artistic characteristics. Respecting eleventh century tradition, the castle and surrounding village remains heavily involved in the production of Volpaia’s wine and olive oil. Castello di Volpaia began life in the 11th Century as part of a fortified village on the border between the territories of Florence and Siena. The production of wine here was first documented in 1172. The organically-farmed estate extends to 370 hectares (914 acres), of which 46 hectares (114 acres) are planted with vines. Grapes are picked by hand into small boxes to ensure minimal damage before reaching the winery.

Tradition has it that Vermentino must see the sea to develop its typical aromas of fresh fruit. It has a straw yellow color, and is floral on the nose, with notes of white peach, pineapple and apple. It is a fresh and elegant wine, with a very persistent aftertaste of yellow fruit and a good structure.
