Château Vieux Maillet

Château Vieux Maillet is a wine estate in the Pomerol appellation of northeastern Bordeaux. The estate spans 10 hectares (25 acres) at the very eastern end of the appellation. Vieux Maillet's neighbors are remarkably prestigious, including Pétrus and Château Gazin to the northwest and Château l’Évangile to the southwest. Vineyard soils are sandy gravel on top of so-called blue clay – a relatively classic Pomerol terroir, albeit at the very edge of the prestigious Pomerol plateau.

Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted at the winery prior to fermentation. Fermentation is primarily carried out in thermo-regulated stainless steel tanks with a small portion also fermented in larger-format (500L) oak barrels. Roughly one third of the production is aged in terracotta amphorae while the remainder is aged in 225-liter barrels (of which around half are new oak).

The 2022 Vieux Maillet is a bold, savory Pomerol wine packed with super-ripe dark plum, leather, menthol and licorice. These carry to a rich, full-bodied, concentrated character that has a great mid-palate, ripe tannins, and considerable elegance and finesse in its mouthfeel. Expressive top notes from the Cabernets add notable aromatic presence.
