Pio Cesare is a wine producer in Piedmont, Italy, particularly known for its elegant Barolo and Barbaresco wines. The estate was founded in 1881 by Cesare Pio, and is one of the oldest in the region and one of the first to export. It is still owned and run by his descendants. The cellar is located in the centre of Alba and its main walls date back to the Roman period. The company owns 70 hectares (172 acres) of vineyards in the Barolo and Barbaresco regions. Grapes for Pio Cesare's wines is also sourced from managed vineyards under long term contracts.
The provenance for this vine is situated in various locations within the Barbaresco area. After the harvest, which takes place by hand, winemaking starts in stainless steel vats. Maceration on the skins follows for about 30 days at rather high temperatures. Finally, the aging in French and Slavonian oak barrels for about 30 months and a small part in barriques.
A ruby red color with garnet reflections. The scent is elegant and delicate, with notes of violets, wild berries, sweet spices and noble woods. The taste is rich, fresh, energetic and elegant, with lively tannins and a long balsamic persistence. Potential for a very long life in the bottle.
