The oldest working distillery on Skye, Talisker was founded 1830 by brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill. By late Victorian times it had become one of the largest selling single malts going from strength-to-strength, showing that then as now, the whisky had its own distinct style. But in 1960, the still-house was destroyed as flaming whisky ran into Loch Harport, that set it ablaze. The rebuilt distillery contained exact replicas of the old stills, featuring U shaped lye pipes that yield a form of double distillation and together with cooling in traditional worm tubs. These features still give Talisker unique texture and character.
This single malt has a famously rich and powerful peat-smoke flavor, while the finish leaves you with a warm peppery taste at the back of the mouth. It is double distilled to create a rich, deep character embodying the maritime characteristics of a coastal whisky, and then aged for a minimum of 10 years in American oak casks. It is one of the most awarded single malt Scotch whiskies in the world including Double Gold medal winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition for four years in a row, including 2020.
Powerful nose with peat-smoke and just a hint of the sea-water salt of fresh oysters, with a citrus sweetness. The Palate is full of rich dried-fruit sweetness, clouds of smoke, strong barley-malt flavors. Warming and intense. Peppery at the back of the mouth, it carries into a warming and long finish complemented by an appetizing sweetness.
